Transfer to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank while two 30% bonuses are stacked on the calendar (Capital One -> JAL, closes Sept 30; Citi ThankYou -> JAL, new partnership through Oct 24 at 1:1 for Strata Elite/Premier) and book JAL's new A350 business suite DFW-Haneda for roughly 55,000-60,000 miles one-way plus modest taxes -- a seat JAL sells for $6,400+ round-trip in cash.

September 22, 2026 — Weekly Kickoff

Your Tuesday download on points, miles, credit cards, and where to eat well while you're at it. Everything below is cross-checked against at least two independent sources and current as of today unless a section says otherwise.

✈️ WHAT'S HOT — ACT FAST

  • Amex Membership Rewards → British Airways / Iberia / Aer Lingus Avios, 30% bonus — ends Saturday, September 27. Five days left. This is the move if you're eyeing a oneworld business-class redemption (Cathay Pacific, Qatar via BA, JAL) priced in Avios' distance-based chart.
  • NEW: Citi ThankYou adds Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a transfer partner at 1:1 (Strata Elite/Premier) or 1:0.7 (no-fee ThankYou cards), launched with an immediate 30% bonus through October 24. JAL awards start around 27,000 miles one-way economy to Asia and 55,000 business — see "This Week's Move" below.
  • Capital One Miles → JAL Mileage Bank, 30% bonus — closes September 30. Nine days left on this one; new JAL accounts have a 7-day hold before miles are redeemable, so don't wait until the last minute.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards → Air Canada Aeroplan, 20% bonus — also closes September 30.
  • NEW: Chase quietly refreshed the Freedom Flex this week (Sept 21): a $250 bonus after $500 spend in the first three months, no annual fee, and the 3% foreign transaction fee has reportedly been dropped. Not a premium-travel card, but a free one worth having in the wallet for category bonuses.

🛫 AIRLINE SWEET SPOTS

From DFW (Thom's home airport), confirmed against American's and Aeroplan's own published partner charts:

  • American AAdvantage → Qatar Airways Qsuites, US–Doha: 70,000 miles one-way business class, plus modest taxes (typically under $50) since American doesn't pass along Qatar's carrier-imposed surcharges. Availability has tightened, but DFW–DOH connections with a domestic AA leg often price the same.
  • American AAdvantage → JAL, US–Tokyo (Haneda): 60,000 miles one-way business class on JAL's new A350, which has closing-door suites. A JAL-ticketed round-trip in the same cabin from DFW runs roughly $6,400+ in cash on JAL's own site depending on dates — meaning the miles redemption is worth several thousand dollars against real fares.
  • American AAdvantage → oneworld partner chart, DFW–Cancún (CUN) or Los Cabos (SJD): 30,000 miles one-way business class.
  • Aeroplan (via the new 20% Chase transfer bonus) → Star Alliance partners, DFW–Reykjavík (KEF): 60,000 miles one-way business class, DFW–Rome (FCO) or DFW–Naples (NAP): 75,000 miles, on Lufthansa Group and other Star Alliance metal — fixed charts, effective since June 2026.

Pair it with a room: World of Hyatt's published category chart still has real sweet spots for the miles you'd transfer above — Hyatt Regency Kyoto or Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile at 15,000 points/night (Category 4), Park Hyatt Dubai at 20,000 points/night (Category 5).

Southwest Companion Pass: Earn 135,000 Companion Pass–qualifying points in a calendar year (credit card spend counts, and posts based on when it hits your account, not when you spent it) and your named companion flies free — including on Business Select fares — through the rest of this year plus all of next year.

How to trigger the fiddly ones: The CSR DoorDash credit requires DashPass enrollment *and* setting the Reserve as your default payment method in the app — it won't apply automatically just because you have the card. The Amex Gold and Platinum Resy credits both require enrolling through the Benefits tab before you spend; retroactive credit isn't guaranteed.

Two-source check: dining credit terms above verified against issuer benefit pages surfaced in search plus CardStack and Upgraded Points trackers.

Eligibility traps, in plain language:

  • Chase 5/24: If you've opened 5+ personal credit cards (any issuer) in the last 24 months, Chase will deny you — including for the Sapphire Preferred above. Business cards from Chase don't count against this, but you still need to be under 5/24 to get approved for one.
  • Amex "once per lifetime": You generally can't get a welcome bonus on a card you've held before, even if it's been years — in practice this seems to reset around 7 years, but Amex doesn't publish an exact number.
  • Citi Strata cards: Citi quietly changed the Strata Elite/Premier/Prestige bonus rule from "once per 48 months" to once per lifetime. The old 48-month language still applies to Citi's AAdvantage-branded cards.

🍽️ DINING CITY SPOTLIGHT: Austin, Seattle, Denver, Philadelphia & Washington DC

This edition rotates through Group 3 of our 20-city pool. As always: being bookable on Resy is *not* the same as qualifying for the Amex Platinum/Gold Resy credit — only venues carrying the "Qualifies for Resy Credit" badge do. ✅ below comes straight from Thom's own Resy credit tracker (263 venues checked, last run September 15, 2026), not a guess.

Austin *(Michelin Guide covers Austin; 38 recognized venues in our tracker)*

  • Hestia — Michelin 1-star, on the Chase Sapphire Reserve dining list. Not on Resy (OpenTable).
  • Odd Duck — Michelin Bib Gourmand. On Resy and ✅ qualifies for the Resy credit.
  • Dai Due — Michelin Bib Gourmand. On Resy and ✅ qualifies.
  • Also notable: Barley Swine and Craft Omakase (both Michelin 1-star, Tock-booked, not Resy).

Seattle *(Washington State isn't covered by the Michelin Guide — no stars/Bib to report here; flagging that plainly rather than padding the section)*

  • Canlis — Seattle's best-known fine-dining room since the 1950s; not currently tracked as Resy-credit eligible in our data.
  • The Pink Door and Takai by Kashiba — both on the Chase Sapphire Reserve dining list.

Denver *(31 Michelin-recognized venues tracked)*

  • The Wolf's Tailor — Michelin 2-star, Denver's top redemption-worthy table. Not on Resy/OpenTable/Tock per our data (call direct).
  • Beckon and Margot — both Michelin 1-star.
  • Safta — Michelin Selected, on Resy and ✅ qualifies for the Resy credit.

Philadelphia *(30 Michelin-recognized venues tracked)*

  • Friday Saturday Sunday — Michelin 1-star.
  • Zahav — Michelin Selected, Resy-bookable and ✅ qualifies.
  • Laser Wolf, Kalaya, Vedge, Forsythia, Sally, Roxanne, Suraya, Dizengoff, Pizzeria Beddia — all Resy-bookable and ✅ qualify for the Resy credit. Philly is the deepest ✅ bench of this edition's five cities.

Washington, DC *(21 Michelin-recognized venues tracked, 17 on the Sapphire Reserve dining list)*

  • Jônt — Michelin 2-star, DC's top table.
  • Rose's Luxury and The Dabney — both Michelin 1-star, Resy-bookable, and ✅ qualify.
  • Bresca — Michelin 1-star, on the Sapphire Reserve dining list.
  • Rooster & Owl — a past Michelin honoree, Resy-bookable and ✅ qualifies.

*Michelin and CSR-list data collected September 9, 2026; Resy-credit badge data collected September 15, 2026 — both inside our 14-day freshness window.*

📈 VALUATION CHANGES

Two clear, two-source-confirmed moves this week — both upward, both on cards Thom actually holds:

ProgramOur referenceNow trending towardMove
Chase Ultimate Rewards1.8¢~2.0–2.05¢ (TPG, Upgraded Points)▲ +0.2 to +0.25¢
Amex Membership Rewards1.8¢~2.0–2.2¢ (TPG, Upgraded Points)▲ +0.2 to +0.3¢

Both TPG's and Upgraded Points' September updates independently price Chase UR and Amex MR meaningfully above our standing 1.8¢ reference — likely reflecting stronger transfer-partner redemptions (like the Marriott 70% and Avios 30% bonuses above) rather than any base-value change from the issuers themselves. Everything else we checked (Citi ThankYou, World of Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, Southwest, AAdvantage, Delta) moved by less than 0.1¢ from reference or the two source sites disagreed enough with each other that we're not confident calling a trend — so we're leaving those unchanged this week rather than guessing.

🏆 THIS WEEK'S MOVE

Transfer to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank while two separate 30% bonuses are stacked on the calendar, and book JAL's new A350 business suite out of DFW.

You've now got two live paths into JAL miles at a discount: Capital One → JAL at 30% (closes September 30 — the more urgent of the two) or the brand-new Citi ThankYou → JAL at 30%, running through October 24 at a full 1:1 ratio if you hold the Strata Elite or Strata Premier. Either way, JAL's own award chart prices US–Tokyo (Haneda) business class at roughly 55,000–60,000 miles one-way plus a few hundred dollars in taxes — a seat JAL sells for $6,400 and up round-trip in cash, in their new A350 suite with closing doors. Pair it with a DFW–Haneda routing (JAL and American both fly it) and you're in a legitimate first-class-adjacent product for a fraction of the cash price. Move the points only once you've got dates in mind — both transfers are one-way and irreversible.
