Friday, October 2, 2026 — End-of-Week Update

Hey — here's what moved since Tuesday, what's closing out this weekend, and what to lock in before the month turns over. As always: luxury points travel is the lens, so we're skipping the coach-class clutter and focusing on what gets you into a lie-flat seat or a Michelin-starred table for a balance you already have.

WHAT'S HOT — ACT FAST

  • Stack two offers for cheap business class to Europe before Halloween. Amex is running a 25% transfer bonus to Air France/KLM Flying Blue (ends October 30), and Flying Blue's own October Promo Rewards knock 25% off select awards booked by October 31 (travel through March 31, 2027). Stacked, that's business class between the US and Europe — Air France to/from Seattle, KLM to/from Mexico City — for 45,000 Flying Blue miles one-way, or short-haul business (Paris–Rome, Paris–Venice, Amsterdam–Budapest) for even less. This is this week's best lie-flat play — see "This Week's Move" below.
  • Amex Offer — Barceló Hotels, 20% back (up to $100): expires Tuesday, October 7. If you've got a Barceló stay on the books, charge it before then.
  • Amex Offer — AKA Hotels, spend $750+ get $150 back: expires October 12. AKA's all-suite properties (NYC, DC, Philadelphia, London) are a solid extended-stay-meets-luxury play.
  • New this week: Amex Offer on UPS shipping, 10–45% back (up to $500), runs through March 29, 2027 — online at ups.com/ship only, not in-store.
  • New this week: Rakuten's best-ever referral bonus — refer a friend (or get referred) and both sides get $50, 5,000 Amex Membership Rewards points, or 5,000 Bilt points once the new member spends $50+ within 90 days. Runs through December 31, 2026.
  • Heads up, not actionable: Chase Sapphire Preferred's 10% anniversary points bonus for existing cardholders ended October 1 — if you already earned it this cycle you're fine, but it won't renew for anyone who opened the card after June 15, 2026.

Also worth knowing: Hilton is converting Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya to a fully all-inclusive, adults-only (18+) resort and opening an 18+ "Ceiba Club" wing at Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya, both effective January 10, 2027. If you're holding an award stay there for next year, the room-charge rules (and your Aspire resort credit math) are about to change — worth a call to the hotel to confirm how your existing reservation is handled.

How to trigger the fiddly ones: For the Amex Platinum Resy credit, check the restaurant's Resy page for the green "Qualifies for Resy Credit" badge *before* you pay — being bookable on Resy is no longer enough. For the Hilton Aspire resort credit, always say "charge it to the room" rather than paying cash/card directly at the table or spa. For Amex Gold and Business Gold credits, you must enroll once in your Amex account before the first purchase, or it won't trigger.

Eligibility traps to know before you apply:

  • Chase 5/24 — Chase denies applicants with 5+ new personal cards (any bank) opened in the last 24 months. This blocks the Sapphire Preferred and all three United cards above. Most business cards don't count — except Capital One and Discover business cards, which do.
  • Amex "once-in-a-lifetime" — You generally can't get a welcome bonus on Platinum, Gold, or Business Gold again if you've held that exact card before.
  • Citi 48-month rule — No bonus on Strata Premier (or its predecessor Citi Premier) if you've earned a new-account bonus on either in the past 48 months.
  • Capital One — New applicants are locked out of the Venture X welcome bonus for 48 months after a previous Venture X bonus.

DINING CITY SPOTLIGHT: Houston, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Nashville & New Orleans

*Credit-badge (✅) status pulled directly from Thom's Resy-tracking database, last checked September 15, 2026 — 17 days old, so treat it as a strong guide rather than gospel; a handful of restaurants may have changed badge status since. Michelin and CSR (Chase Sapphire Reserve dining list) status from the same database, also as of September 9–15, 2026.*

Houston

  • Hidden Omakase — Michelin Selected, on Resy, ✅ *Qualifies for Resy Credit*. A genuine omakase counter in a city that doesn't get enough love for it.
  • Nancy's Hustle — Michelin Bib Gourmand, on Resy, ✅. Reliable, lively, and one of the harder reservations in town.
  • Theodore Rex — Michelin Bib Gourmand, on Resy, ✅.

San Francisco

  • Mister Jiu's — Michelin 1-Star, on Resy, ✅. Modern Chinese-American in a beautifully restored Chinatown space — a legitimate splurge table that still takes the Platinum Resy credit.
  • Kin Khao — Michelin 1-Star Thai, on Resy, ✅. Rare for a starred restaurant to also be an easy, informal booking.
  • SF has 151 tracked venues and 105 Michelin mentions in our database — the deepest bench of any city in rotation this edition.

Las Vegas

  • Kabuto Edomae Sushi — Michelin Selected, on Resy, ✅. Off-Strip, reservation-only, worth the detour.
  • COTE Vegas — not Michelin-listed in our database, but the Korean steakhouse outpost of NYC's COTE, on Resy, ✅ — a strong proxy for a Strip-adjacent splurge night.

Nashville

  • Nashville is a tale of two booking platforms this edition. Its three Michelin 1-Stars — The Catbird Seat, Bastion, and Locust — are all OpenTable-only, so none carries the Amex Resy credit; Bastion is, however, on the Chase Sapphire Reserve dining list, so CSR holders get their $300 annual credit there automatically.
  • On Resy with the credit: Sho Pizza Bar (Michelin Bib Gourmand), ✅.
  • Thinner than the other four cities on confirmable Resy-credit picks this week — worth flagging plainly rather than padding.

New Orleans

  • Galatoire's, Herbsaint, and Pêche Seafood Grill — all Michelin Selected, all on Resy, all ✅.
  • Cochon — Michelin Bib Gourmand, on Resy, ✅.
  • NOLA is one of the strongest cities in the current 20-city pool for stacking Michelin recognition with the Resy credit — four confirmed ✅ picks above, with nine more Michelin-recognized venues on Resy in our database.

Texas hometown pick: Houston's Hidden Omakase, above — Thom's home-market pick every edition, per the rotation rules.

VALUATION CHANGES

The Points Guy refreshed its monthly valuations on October 1, 2026. Compared with our standing reference set, four programs moved by 0.1¢ or more:

Amex Membership Rewards1.8¢2.0¢+0.2¢
World of Hyatt1.55¢1.65¢+0.1¢

The Chase and Amex moves are the real story — both transferable currencies got meaningfully more valuable this month, which is good news if you're sitting on a stash of either. Citi ThankYou (1.9¢), Marriott Bonvoy (0.75¢, essentially flat), Southwest (1.25¢), American AAdvantage (1.45¢) and Delta SkyMiles (1.2¢) all held within the no-flag range.

THIS WEEK'S MOVE

If you've got Amex Membership Rewards sitting around and any flexibility on dates this winter or spring, transfer to Air France/KLM Flying Blue before October 30 to catch the 25% bonus, then book a Flying Blue October Promo Rewards award before October 31 for travel through March 31, 2027. Business class Seattle–Europe (Air France) or Mexico City–Europe (KLM) prices at roughly 45,000 miles one-way after the transfer bonus — a lie-flat seat across the Atlantic for well under half the miles you'd expect, and for a fraction of the $4,000+ cash fare. Both windows close at the end of this month, so don't let this one drift into November.
